About the project
A disused stone warehouse turned into eight live–work lofts, keeping the rough walls and adding a quiet timber layer inside.
The brief
Keep the building's weight and memory, and make it comfortable to live in year-round. The owners wanted homes that still read as one building rather than eight separate fit-outs.
Our approach
We left the granite shell exposed and inserted a freestanding oak "furniture core" in each unit that holds the kitchen, storage and stairs. Everything new stops short of the old walls, so the two eras never quite touch.
- Lime plaster only where the stone was beyond repair
- Underfloor heating in a new screed laid over the original slab
- Shared courtyard planted with drought-tolerant grasses
