Ten Buildings That Shaped Our Studio

Every studio has a private list of buildings it measures itself against. Ours changes slowly, but a few have stayed on it for years.

What we look for

Not style. We look for buildings that solve an ordinary problem in an unexpected way: a staircase that doubles as a reading room, a roof that collects all of a house's water.

The lessons

1. Structure can be the decoration.
2. A threshold is a room, not a line.
3. Cheap materials, used generously, beat expensive ones used timidly.

We'll write about each of them in more depth over the coming months.
